my story as a reader
I have a long history with books. I grew up in a family of readers and book collectors and for as long as I can remember, I was fascinated by books. My father passed away when I was nine and one of the sweetest memories I have of him is us relaxing on the couch together - both with books in hand. When the economy in Ukraine took a giant downturn, my mother lost her job as an engineer but was able to find work at a local book store. We struggled financially but thrived intellectually. The discounted books she brought home gave us so much joy and expanded our horizons beyond what was happening in our country. They gave us new hope.
Unfortunately, When my mother and I immigrated to the United States, we had to leave our library behind, as we were only allowed to bring two suitcases. Later, when settling in our apartment in Los Angeles, we would realize that we didn't even bring a spoon or a fork with us! It took us a few years to be able to afford books again, but we started all over and the family legacy of collecting books lives on.
Now, as a mother I place the same importance on books as my mother did. We speak English, Russian and Hebrew at home, so we have a variety of books in all three languages and stacks of books on hundreds of topics.
